What Life Is Really Like for Anna Nicole Smith’s Daughter Now

When news broke of Anna Nicole Smith’s untimely passing in 2006, the public mourned. After all, she was a celebrated icon and superstar who had just braved a strategy just a few months prior. But most importantly, there is one burning question many have asked. What will happen to her infant daughter from there? Almost a decade later, we’re about to pull back the curtain on Dan Lin Burkehead, the very same daughter the public was wondering about almost [snorts] two decades ago.
Let’s take a look at what life is really like for Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter. Now, before we get to know the daughter in question, let’s talk about her mother, who lived just as colorfully as her. Anna Nicole Smith was born Vicky Lynn Hogan on November 28th, 1967 as the only daughter of Vie Tabers Arthur and Donald Eugene Hogan in Houston, Texas.
From her father’s side, she had five half siblings and was primarily raised by her mother in Mexia. The poor girl had a difficult life growing up and it’s a known fact that both her parents were abusive. Her father allegedly beat her mother when she was pregnant with her and this cycle continued and was passed on to her. According to the wouldbe star, she was abused and neglected by her mother.
I’ve struggled my whole life, she told Entertainment Weekly years later in a raw interview. You know, I had a really rough childhood growing up. She goes on about how her mother, who was a police officer, would not only beat her, but also handcuff her to the bed for days at a time.
As if that’s not bad enough, she also said that her mother allowed her stepfather to assault her. The act only encouraged her brother to abuse her and her sister as well. Interestingly enough, the Future Stars family denied these claims. And in a 2017 interview with the Daily Mail, her mother denied such stories that she and her daughter didn’t have a strained relationship and that the latter was lying.
Her half-brother also shared the same sentiment, claiming that the wouldbe model is making stories up about them and defended their mother. Her friends on the other hand thought differently. Some say that there is some truth to such accusations about her mother. One of her close friends Paul said in the 2023 documentary Anna Nicole Smith, “You don’t know me that the actress hated her mother.
She would always tell me she hated her mother.” Ato shared, “The only thing I knew was that Anna had ever wanted to be like Vie. Besides suffering from her parents, Hogan also claimed that she grew up in extreme poverty. Her aunt Kay Beal, who was raped by her biological father, told Texas Monthly in an interview back in 1993 how she used to slip the young Hogan some of her food stamp money just so her niece could buy herself some candy.
According to them, their family was so poor that they had to steal toilet paper from restaurants. Winter was especially hard for them with Hogan’s mother unable to afford a heater for their home. So, the children were left to wear thermal undergarments throughout the winter. Ironically, her mother dismissed the claims that she grew up poor.
According to the older Hogan, all of those tales were just a way for the wouldbe star to gain sympathy from the public. She said, “Mama, the worse the story, the more pitiful the story, the more money I make.” Vie Hogan told Daily Mail about what her daughter told her back then, “A dirt poor, pitiful child that now, mama, that is a story.
” The latter remembered her daughter telling her one time. Despite Vie Hogan contradicting her daughter’s claims about growing up poor, the latter’s friends and exes say otherwise. One of her ex-boyfriends, as well as Larry Burkehead, father of the model’s daughter, confirmed that she did grow up poor.
After Vicky Lin Hogan’s father, Donald Hogan, raped her aunt K. Beal Hogan’s mother, Vie May Hogan, made sure that he would not have any access to their daughter’s life. For the heinous act, Donald Hogan served 6 months in prison. But at the time of his release, sex offenders were not required to publicly register.
He married a woman named Wanda Atkinson, who bore him children, whom he also assaulted. with an absent father. The young Vicky Hogan didn’t know the true story behind her father’s absence and longed to meet him one day. Plus, she also did not have any idea that she had step siblings. At 23, she finally met Donna Hogan, her halfsister.
It’s sad to think that I would be fantasizing about being with my big sister while she was so desperate to find her father. and we were all within such close proximity to one another. Donna Hogan said in the book Train Wreck, the life and death of Anna Nicole Smith. For a time, Vicky Hogan enjoyed a close relationship with her half siblings, but ultimately she cut them off for fear that they were after her money.
Hogan finally had the chance to meet her father, and it was all thanks to her hiring a private investigator to find the man. From there, they arranged a meetup where she not only met her father, but also her then 16-year-old half-brother, Donnie. Unfortunately, Donald Hogan did not meet her expectations of an idealized father figure.
The latter even attempted to assault her. Hogan’s half-brother, Donnie, [snorts] believed these allegations since the patriarch had admitted to chasing Vicky Hogan’s aunt Kay as a child before he assaulted her. Blessed with good looks and a charming personality, it didn’t take long for the right people to find Hogan and make her a star.
Additionally, her photogenic nature also helped kickstart her modeling career. And what [snorts] better way to put herself out there than to land a whopping centerfold at Playboy magazine. That’s exactly what Hogan did, bagging the May 1992 centerfold and [snorts] being named the Playmate of the Year in 1993. That same year in 1993, she also bagged a modeling gig for H and M, boosting her exposure since her pictures were displayed on large billboards in both Sweden and Norway.
A lot of great things happened to her that year since she also graced the cover of Marie Clare and GQ in October of the same year. It was one project after another. But another milestone for her is that she secured a contract in a guest jeans ad campaign replacing supermodel Claudia Schiffer. This campaign features a series of sultry black and white photographs.
And it was here that she adopted the stage name Anna Nicole Smith, now [snorts] known as such. Photographers were quick to notice the now Smith’s uncanny resemblance to Jane Mansfield, another renowned playmate and a well-known sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s. Despite her success, Anna Nicole Smith faced a lot of hurdles that challenged her whole persona.
She may have found success at modeling, but it didn’t come easily for Smith, given how she had always suffered from low self-esteem growing up. One of her main concerns was her small chest, and she made it a point to get a breast augmentation once she was able. However, once she did, the model’s self-image remained poor. Her landing [snorts] such modeling gigs was also nothing short of a miracle, given how most modeling agencies once refused to sign her because of how curvy she is.
She didn’t conform well to the super thin models that were rampant in the ’90s, but eventually fame still found her. Be that as it may, Smith found herself being ostracized by fellow models because of her fuller figure. She even told Texas Monthly how the other girls didn’t want to have nothing to do with me.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, being in the spotlight also put her under relentless media scrutiny. Of course, she did her best to appeal to the masses and in doing so led to a terrible relationship with food and an eating disorder. Everyone was always dogging me because I was heavy. She opened up to entertainment tonight. Now the press doesn’t praise me for losing the weight and I find that very hateful.
They just want all bad stories. To make matters worse, the media even painted Smith as a glutton. But professionals saw through her pain. According to documentary director Ursula McFaran, Smith’s weight swings were not because of drugs and greed, but rather due to eating disorders, which were obviously rooted in psychological pain.
On top of that, she also struggled with depression, chronic pain, and borderline personality disorder. The pain she struggled with made a lot of things worse. For one, her issues bled into her relationships, which affected many. Smith’s relationship, or lack thereof, with her father bled through her connections. According to You Don’t Know Me director Ursula McFaran, the traumatic event helped make sense of why Smith married J.
Howard Marshall II, who was several decades her senior. She was searching for a father figure all her life, McFaran told Vanity Fair. While she was still living in Mexia and working at Jim’s Crispy Fried Chicken, Smith worked with Billy Wayne Smith, who would later become her first husband. The two married on April 4th, 1985 when she was 17 and he was 16.
She bore him a son named Daniel Wayne Smith the following year. But their marriage was short-lived, ultimately ending in divorce in 1993. A year after meeting her father, Anna Nicole Smith married the 89year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, whom he met while she was working at a Houston strip club back in 1991.
Of course, this met with many raised eyebrows, and simply put, the majority of the masses viewed her as a gold digger. She was only 26 at the time. Despite this, many of her friends claimed that she truly loved him, with Smith telling Entertainment Tonight that she brought the sparkle back in her senior husband following the latter’s suffering from a personal tragedy.
Before he married Smith, Marshall’s previous girlfriend was 48-year-old Diane Juel Walker, who died by the time Marshall met Smith. During their time together, Smith cared for her husband, given how the latter’s deteriorating health worsened during his final months. Unfortunately for her, Marshall’s son, E.
Pierce Marshall, stepped in and prevented her from caring for her sick husband. The younger marshall obtained a court order to stop Smith from seeing his father and also put a stop to her access to a $50,000 monthly allowance. A year into marrying Anna Nicole Smith, J. Howard Marshall II succumbed to his death at the age of 90.
From there, a long battle ensued with Smith claiming that she had a share of the oil tycoons amounting to $1.6 billion. It didn’t take long for the model to file for bankruptcy, and at first she was awarded $450 million, but this ruling was soon overturned. To this day, Anna Nicole Smith was not granted any of Marshall’s fortune.
The model [snorts] suffered a lot more than she let on. So when her death broke the news, people were shocked at the things she handled alone. It was no secret among her family and friends that Anna Nicole Smith struggled a lot behind the scenes. On top of her mental struggles, she also had a hard time dealing with her chronic back pain, which was attributed to her breast enhancement surgery.
Photographer Larry Burkehead, who was one of her former partners and the father of her daughter Danilin, said Smith also suffered from seizures. From here, Smith took various prescription drugs and soon enough she was self-medicating with potentially dangerous combinations. In 2006, she put a stop to it when she discovered she was pregnant with her daughter, Danny.
Larry Burkehead also told people that Smith never used illicit substances. A lot of people had this misconception that Anna was doing street drugs, he began. She had doctors treating her for these issues. Did she always take her medicine like she was supposed to? Probably not. Smith attempted to go cold turkey when she was pregnant with Danin since she was concerned it would affect her baby, but her physician told her that it was far more dangerous to go through withdrawal while pregnant.
Hence, she was put back on medication. [snorts] Smith’s bodyguard, on the other hand, claimed that the star was dependent on drugs during her final days when she allegedly demanded more and washed them down with alcohol. Some say that her drug use worsened after the death of her son, Daniel. But Ursula McFarlan, the documentary’s director, believes that Smith’s use predated the death of Daniel.
Speaking of Daniel, he was excited about the idea of becoming an older brother. However, just days after Smith gave birth to Daniel in the Bahamas, Daniel died just a few days short of his little sister’s birth. He was only 20 at the time of his death from an accidental drug overdose. Smith made the horrifying discovery when she found him at her bedside and at first thought he was only asleep.
She attempted to wake him only to find out that he was gone. This shocking discovery left Smith so distraught that she had to be put under sedation. She was so shocked by the devastating news that Smith even experienced memory loss from the event, which is believed to be the result in tandem of her being put into sedation.
During his funeral procession, she even tried to jump into his coffin. Then, 5 months after her son’s death, Anna Nicole Smith died in her hotel room in Florida. She was just 39. Similar to her son, Smith’s death was ruled an accidental prescription drug overdose. Despite the tragedy that followed her throughout her life, there is [snorts] still a silver lining in Anna Nicole Smith in the form of her daughter who survived her.
The events following the death of Anna Nicole Smith were nothing short of tumultuous and even bled through to her daughter Danilin. Smith gave birth to Dany on September 7th, 2006, just 3 days before the death of her son, Daniel. From there, the young Danolin found herself at the center of a highly publicized and controversial paternity case.
In the end, one of Smith’s former partners, photographer Larry Burkehead, was named as the father and granted sole custody of Dany. It was no easy feat to win custody over his daughter because on her birth certificate, Smith’s partner, Howard K. Stern, was named as Danny Lynn’s father. Their custody battle ended up with a DNA test with the results affirming that Burkehead was the biological father.
Instead of being bitter toward him, Stern offered support with the latter even showing Burkehead how to change Dany’s diaper. With a mother known as a renowned model, it did not come as a surprise when Dany Burkehead followed her late mother’s footsteps and modeled for Guess’s children’s line at the age of six. Paul Marciano, the founder of Guest, even told USA Today that Danilin has the same playful spirit that her mother had on set.
Of course, many were outraged, believing it was irresponsible of her father to expose her to the same environment that had strained her late mother. However, Burkehead stood on business and defended his daughter’s choice. Danilin has always looked up to her mom’s image, he told Good Morning America during a guest appearance. This is kind of Dan’s way of paying tribute to her mom in her own special way.
It might be her only connection with her mom. Larry Burkehead also made sure to raise his daughter away from the public eye. And after her modeling gig with Guess’s Children’s Line, he made sure to turn down subsequent modeling and acting gigs. He raised her in Kentucky and was a very hands-on father who worked hard, ensuring that Danny lived a relatively normal life.
Like her father, Dany has a limited social media presence and even shares an Instagram account with her father. Right now, Danny Burkehead is still living a normal life in Kentucky under the watchful and guiding eyes of her father. The father-daughter duo also has a tradition of attending the Kentucky Derby every year, an event that was also loved by her mother.
After all, it was during the Barnstable Brown Gala where Larry Burkehead first met Anna Nicole Smith. The father-daughter duo has attended the Kentucky Derby ever since she was 3 years old and they continue to do so to this day. Burkehead even told E News in 2015 about how his daughter is his good luck charm since she picks all the winners.
Just [snorts] last year, Larry Burkehead took to Instagram to announce that his daughter had finally graduated from high school. He shared a few photos he took with his daughter at the Barnstable Brown Gala with him writing in the caption how they were looking forward to a fun derby weekend. Similar to how they live in general, the father and daughter keep a tight lip on Danilyn’s [snorts] college plans.
However, they did share that she took a gap year between high school and college since she hoped to get into both acting and modeling while attending college. Of course, her father has reservations about her decision to venture into such industries. However, he believes it’s also his job to be supportive as her only parent. Then, in a rare chat, Dan Burkehead shared with E news that Hugh Jackman inspired her to give acting a try.
Of course, her father was also quick to warn her about the ups and downs of the industry, hoping that Danilin really listened. “At the end of the day, she’s 18 now, so I really don’t have any say,” he told People in an interview. “This year, Danin also graced the Barnstable Brown Gala wearing the same iconic black dress Anna Nicole Smith wore more than two decades ago.
She also wore her hair in the same updo, making Danalin look so much like Anna Nicole Smith’s twin. It was also an emotional moment for her father, with the latter sharing with people that the last time he saw that dress was on Smith herself. Speaking of dress, Larry Burkehead has been keeping Smith’s wardrobe in storage for years, safekeeping it until his daughter ever wanted to check out her late mother’s style.
The black dress Dylan wore to the gala with the plunging neckline and thigh high slit was a bit racier than anything she had ever worn. But the young Dany told Access Hollywood that it made her feel connected to her late
