Pentatonix’s Transformation Is Turning Heads

Pentatonix’s Transformation Is Turning Heads

From humble beginnings on the singoff to dominating global charts and soldout tours, Pentatonix’s journey is one for the books. This group didn’t just rise to fame, they harmonized their way into history. But how did Five Voices go from college dreams and YouTube covers to Grammy wins and international stardom? Today, we’re breaking down the full transformation from their earliest days to the showstoppping force they are now.

Let’s see just how far Pentatonix has come. The story of how this celebrated vocal ensemble came together begins in the heart of Arlington, Texas, where two young children who would later become founding members first crossed paths. Kirsten Maldonado and Scott Hoying were merely 9 years old when they initially met.

Both drawn to the enchanting world of musical theater, these two youngsters discovered they shared an intense passion for performing, and this mutual interest quickly blossomed into a lasting friendship as they participated in various local theatrical productions throughout their community. The theatrical stage proved to be more than just an outlet for creative expression.

It became the breeding ground for connections that would shape their futures. >> [snorts] >> It was during one of these theatrical endeavors that Hoying encountered another talented young performer named Mitch Grassi. The two were cast together in a local staging of the beloved musical Annie, and their chemistry was immediately apparent.

Like Maldonado and Hoying before them, these two youngsters realized they shared an extraordinary connection through their love of music and performance. As fate would have it, all three of these musically gifted individuals ended up enrolling at the same high school in Arlington. [snorts] This convergence of talent under one roof created the perfect environment for their friendship to deepen and their musical abilities to flourish.

They weren’t just classmates or casual acquaintances. They became [snorts] genuinely close friends, bonded together by the powerful thread of their shared devotion to music and performance. According to Grassy’s recollections, both he and Hoying began their musical journeys at remarkably young ages with Grassi and Maldonado diving into musical theater when they were approximately 9 or 10 years old.

Hoying later reflected on these formative years, emphasizing the profound significance of growing up alongside his two closest friends. The three of them didn’t just attend school together. They navigated their entire childhoods as best friends, creating memories and experiences that would serve as the foundation for something much bigger than any of them could have imagined at the time.

When high school arrived, the trio naturally gravitated toward the school choir program. This decision would prove to be pivotal in their collective story. The choir room became their sanctuary, a place [snorts] where they could explore their vocal abilities and experiment with different sounds and arrangements. It was within these walls that the true origin story of what would eventually become pentatonics actually began to take shape.

During these early choir days, something magical started happening. As the three friends sang together repeatedly, they began developing an intuitive understanding of how their voices could blend and complement one another. They discovered they had a natural talent for creating beautiful harmonies, weaving their distinct vocal tones together into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Initially, this wasn’t done with any grand ambitions or career aspirations in mind. They simply enjoyed making music together. It was pure uncomplicated fun for three teenagers who love to sing. However, everything changed when an unexpected opportunity presented itself, offering them a chance to take their casual singing sessions to the next level.

The genesis of what would become Pentatonix as a recognized entity can be [snorts] traced to an intriguing local radio promotion in Arlington, Texas. This particular contest was designed to give aspiring vocalists a chance to shine, inviting participants to record and submit their performances for consideration. The grand [snorts] prize was something that would excite any young musical theater enthusiast at the time.

An opportunity to meet the cast members of Glee, the Fox network’s hit musical television series that was captivating audiences nationwide. The three friends, Hoying, Grassi, and Maldonado, saw this contest as the perfect opportunity to combine their talents in a new way. As Maldonado recounted in her conversation with Sweetie High, the trio came together specifically for this radio competition and worked diligently to create something special for their submission.

They poured their energy into crafting an arrangement that would showcase their unique vocal abilities and the chemistry they had developed over years of friendship. Although their submission didn’t ultimately secure the winning position in the contest, the experience proved far more valuable than any prize could have been.

Rather than feeling discouraged by the loss, the three friends recognized the potential in what they had created. They took the performance they had prepared and a capella interpretation of the chart topping collaboration between Beyonce and Lady Gaga on the song Telephone and decided to refine it further. They polished their arrangement, tightened their harmonies, and prepared to unveil it in front of a live audience.

The venue they chose for this debut was a high school choir concert, an event that would prove to be a turning point in their musical journey. When they took the stage and delivered their carefully crafted ac capella rendition, the response from the audience exceeded anything they had anticipated. As Maldonado later explained, the performance generated substantial attention and enthusiasm from those in attendance, and this positive reception motivated them to continue performing together and developing their sound.

Someone in the audience had the foresight to capture their performance on video, and this recording was subsequently uploaded to YouTube. The video showcased the trio’s impressive three-part harmony work, displaying a level of sophistication and musicality that was remarkable for performers of their age.

What happened next could only be described as extraordinary. The video began circulating online and captured the attention of music lovers far beyond their local community. Originally posted back in 2010, this performance [music] video has achieved legendary status among fans of the group. Over the years, it has accumulated more than 1.

4 million views with countless people discovering it and sharing it with others who appreciate vocal excellence. The success of that YouTube video sparked something in Hoying’s imagination. He began envisioning the possibilities of what they could achieve with a small, tightly focused ac capella group that featured powerful, expressive [music] voices.

This vision would become the blueprint for what eventually evolved into their five member ac capella act. The foundation had been laid through years of friendship, countless hours of singing together, and [snorts] now a viral video that proved audiences were hungry for their unique approach to vocal music.

After completing their high school education, the paths of future Pentatonix members Hoying and Maldonado diverged as they pursued their college dreams. Maldonado headed to the University of Oklahoma while Hoying enrolled at the University of Southern California, leaving Grassi behind to finish his remaining high school years. For [snorts] a time, it seemed their musical collaboration might have been just a cherished chapter of their teenage years, a beautiful memory to look back on fondly.

However, Destiny had other plans for the trio. In 2011, while studying at USC, Hoying [snorts] stumbled upon information about an NBC television program called The Singoff. This wasn’t just another talent show. It was a competition specifically designed for a Capella singing groups, a format that seemed tailorade for what he and his friends had been developing.

His mind immediately went to Maldonado and Grassi. Recognizing this as a potentially life-changing opportunity, Hoying reached out to his longtime friends with the proposal, and they were [snorts] both enthusiastic about reuniting in Los Angeles to audition for the show. The prospect of competing on national television and potentially launching a professional music career was too exciting to pass up.

However, as they began preparing for the audition, they encountered a significant obstacle that threatened to derail their plans before they even began. The rules of the competition were clear and inflexible. Groups needed a minimum of five members to be eligible to compete. The trio was two singers short, and they needed to find compatible vocalists quickly if they wanted any chance of participating.

This challenge could have ended their dreams right there, but Hoying was determined to find a solution. Acting on a recommendation from someone in the music community, Hoying reached out to a vocalist named Avi Kaplan, who specialized in singing bass parts. Kaplan’s [snorts] deep, resonant voice would add a rich foundation to their harmonies, filling out the lower register of their sound in a way that would prove [music] essential to their signature style.

Still, they needed one more member, and this [snorts] final addition would need to bring something unique to the table. The group wanted to incorporate beatboxing into their arrangements, adding rhythmic percussion sounds created entirely with the human voice. This would give them a competitive edge and allow them to create fuller, more dynamic arrangements without any instrumental accompaniment.

Their search led them to an extraordinary discovery on YouTube. They found a video featuring Kevin Olus Sola that left them absolutely astounded. In this video, Olusa demonstrated an incredible skill set that seemed almost impossible. He was simultaneously beatboxing while playing classical cello, switching seamlessly between the two forms of musical expression.

The technical proficiency and musicality displayed in the video were breathtaking. Hoying shared his amazement with the Daily Trojan, explaining that when they discovered Olus Solola’s video, they were blown away by what they witnessed. The level of musicianship demonstrated was unlike anything they had seen before, and they knew immediately that they had found their fifth member.

Olusa possessed exactly the unique talent they needed to round out their sound and give them something special that would set them apart from other competing groups. The group reached out to Olus Sola with their proposal, explaining their vision and the opportunity that awaited if he would join them. Olusa was intrigued [music] and agreed to become part of this newly formed ensemble.

There was just one practical problem. Olusa needed to get to Los Angeles for the audition, and time was running short. Demonstrating their commitment and determination, the other four members pulled their limited financial resources together and purchased a plane ticket to bring Olusola to California. With [snorts] that flight, their quintet was finally complete.

Now they needed a name that would represent their collective identity. After some discussion, they settled on pentatonics, a clever name inspired by the pentatonic scale, which is a five-note musical scale used across various musical traditions worldwide. The name was not only musically meaningful, but also reflected the fact that they were now a five member group.

However, there was barely any time for the newly formed pentatonics to rehearse together before their crucial audition. They selected their arrangement of Telephone, the same song that had launched their initial success as their audition piece. It was a risky decision considering they had minimal time to integrate two new members who had never performed with the original trio before.

The day before their scheduled audition, all five members finally gathered together and ran through the song for the first time as a complete group. What happened during that rehearsal was nothing short of remarkable. As Maldonado later told Sweetie High, the experience was genuinely amazing. Despite having virtually no preparation time together, their voices blended beautifully and the arrangement flowed together naturally.

The [snorts] chemistry was undeniable. Even though they had every reason to expect it might be a disaster given the circumstances, their audition performance proved strong enough to earn them a coveted spot in the competition. As the singoff progressed through its various rounds of elimination, something wonderful began happening among the five members of Pentatonics.

They started developing deeper connections both as musicians and as people. [snorts] The pressure of the competition, the long hours of rehearsal, and the shared experience of performing on national television forged bonds that went beyond just being bandmates. Round after round, they survived elimination, consistently impressing the judges and viewers with their innovative arrangements and tight harmonies.

What had initially seemed like a long shot, actually winning the entire competition along with the prizes of a recording contract with Epic [music] Records and $200,000 was beginning to feel like a genuine possibility. The journey wasn’t without its dramatic moments and challenges. By the time they reached the semifinal round, the group was pushed to their absolute limits.

Their dress rehearsal had been an absolute catastrophe with nothing seeming to work correctly. Doubts crept in and they worried they might have come so far only to fall short at this critical juncture. But when it came time for the actual performance in front of the cameras, judges, and live audience, something magical occurred.

Everything suddenly clicked into place. All the pieces that had seemed scattered during rehearsal came together seamlessly, creating what Hoying described as the most magical moment of the entire competition. As Pentatonics continued to perform week after week, their sound continued to evolve and improve. By the time they reached the [music] final stages of the competition, the group had become an incredibly tight musical unit, functioning almost like a single instrument with five different voices.

Each performance seemed to build on the previous one, showcasing their growth and adaptability. When they took the stage for their performances, [music] they were completely synchronized, firing on all cylinders, with every member contributing their unique strengths to create something extraordinary. Hoying recalled that particular semifinal performance with crystal clarity, knowing even as they finished that the audience’s wild reaction meant they had secured their place in the finale. The response was overwhelming,

confirming what they had begun to believe. They [snorts] had a real shot at winning this entire competition. When the final results were announced, Pentatonix was declared the winner of that season of the singoff. The validation from the judges was equally meaningful. Sarah Burilles, serving as one of the show’s judges and herself an accomplished artist, offered glowing praise for the group in a subsequent interview with Billboard.

She characterized them as innovators who were pushing boundaries in exactly the right ways, expanding what was possible in a capella music. Bail particularly noted the incredible chemistry evident among the group members, recognizing that this intangible quality was part of what made them so special and compelling to watch.

Over the years, Pentatonix has grown from a bold a capella experiment into one of the most successful vocal groups in modern music. Their tight harmonies, creative arrangements, and massive online following turned them into global stars. But as the group continued to grow, so did the individual dreams of its members. While Pentatonix has remained strong as a group, each member has also taken steps to explore their own musical paths through solo projects.

The [snorts] biggest turning point came in 2017 when Pentatonic shared a surprising announcement that shook fans around the world. In a heartfelt Facebook video, bass singer Avi Kaplan revealed that he would be leaving the group. [snorts] For many fans, the news was emotional and unexpected. Kaplan explained that while he was grateful for the [music] success Pentatonix had achieved, the fast pace, constant touring, and growing demands of the group had become overwhelming for him.

In a written statement that accompanied the video, Kaplan opened up about how difficult the decision was. He admitted that he had struggled deeply with the choice and described it as the hardest decision he had ever made in his life. His honesty resonated with fans, many of whom appreciated his courage in choosing his mental and emotional well-being over fame.

Interestingly, Kaplan had already begun laying the groundwork for a solo career even before his official exit. Just weeks prior to the announcement, he released his first solo single under the name Aval and the Sequoas. The project leaned into folk and acoustic sounds, a noticeable shift from Pentatonix’s polished pop style.

Not long after, he followed up with his debut EP, giving fans a clearer picture of the musical direction he wanted to pursue. Kaplan continued building momentum as a solo artist. In 2019, he announced his first solo tour, allowing him to connect with audiences in a more intimate setting. Then in 2022, he reached another milestone with the release of his first full-length solo album.

The record further cemented his identity as an independent artist [music] separate from the group that made him famous. Meanwhile, Pentatonix faced the challenge of moving forward without one of their founding members. Instead of slowing down, the group made a bold move by welcoming a new bass singer. In October 2017, Scott Hoying announced that Matt Sally would be joining Pentatonics as Kaplan’s replacement.

Naturally, fans were curious and a bit nervous about how the change would affect the group’s sound. Those concerns quickly faded. Sally blended seamlessly into pentatonics, bringing both strong vocals and a fresh energy. Over time, he proved that he was not just filling a role, but becoming a true part of the group’s identity.

Six years after joining, Sally reflected on the experience in a 2023 interview. He [snorts] described joining Pentatonix as a dream come true and admitted that he still couldn’t quite believe it had happened. Sally also revealed a meaningful detail about his hiring process. He wasn’t officially brought on board until he met Avi Kaplan in person and received his blessing.

Looking back on that moment, Sally described it as a symbolic passing of the torch, a gesture that helped him feel truly accepted into the group. While Kaplan stepped away to focus entirely on solo work, the remaining members of Pentatonix chose a different path. They stayed committed to the group while also exploring their own creative interests on the side.

Beatboxer Kevin Olus Sola was the first to step into solo territory. His [snorts] project, a five- song EP titled The Renegade, showcased a unique blend of beatboxing and classical cello. It was a reflection of Olusa’s diverse musical background and his desire to push boundaries. Speaking about the project, [music] he made it clear that he wanted listeners to see it as more than just something beautiful.

Instead, [music] he hoped people would recognize it as artistic, interesting, and respectful to the classical instrument he loved. Kristen Maldonado followed with her own solo journey. In 2017, she released her debut single, Break a Little, which highlighted a more personal and emotional side of her artistry. She later released her first solo EP, Love, giving fans a deeper look into her voice outside the group setting.

In 2018, Maldonado achieved another longtime dream by making her Broadway debut in the musical Kinky Boots, proving her talents extended well beyond recording studios and concert stages. In 2021, Mitch [music] Grassi took a bold step by launching a solo project under the name Messer.

His debut release, Roses, marked a shift into indie and electronic music, [music] offering a darker and more experimental sound. The project allowed Grassi to express a side of himself that didn’t always fit within Pentatonix’s style. Scott Hoying was the last of the group to officially release a solo album.

In 2023, he debuted Parallel, a seven-track project that focused heavily on vulnerability and self-expression. Hoying openly admitted that stepping out as a solo artist was intimidating for him. However, he also said the timing felt right as he entered a new and fulfilling chapter of his life filled with creativity and motivation. Together or apart, the members of Pentatonics have shown that their talent goes far beyond one group.

Whether performing as a unit or exploring individual paths, each member continues to grow, evolve, and share their music with the
