10 Worst MOB Leaders of Italian Crime Families

10 Worst MOB Leaders of Italian Crime Families

Being a mob boss requires a specific skill set. Strategic thinking, emotional control, the ability to command loyalty through respect rather than just fear. The wisdom to know when violence serves the organization and when it destroys it. The intelligence to avoid law enforcement while maintaining profitable operations.

The best mob bosses, Lucky Luciano, Carlo Gambino, Meer Lansky, built empires that lasted decades. They made millions. They died free or from natural causes in old age. They understood that organized crime is a business and businesses survive through careful management, not chaos. But not every mob boss had those skills.

Some were too violent. Some were too paranoid. Some were too stupid. Some combined all three qualities into a toxic package that destroyed everyone around them. These bosses didn’t just fail themselves. They destroyed their families. Got their members killed or imprisoned. Brought law enforcement attention that devastated entire organizations.

left legacies of failure that are still studied by prosecutors and historians as examples of how not to run a criminal enterprise. This is the list of the 10 worst mob leaders in Italian crime family history. Not the least powerful, some of these men controlled massive operations. Not the least violent, several were absolutely brutal.

But the worst in terms of leadership, the bosses who made decisions so catastrophically bad that their own organizations were relieved when they were finally removed from power. If you’re new here, subscribe, drop a comment, and let us know where you’re watching from. Let’s get into it. Number 10, Carmine the Snake.

Persico Columbbo family. Carmine Persico became boss of the Columbbo crime family in 1973. Held that position until his death in 2019 at age 85. Was boss for 46 years. But for 33 of those years he was in prison. And for most of those years the Columbbo family was at war with itself. What made Persico one of the worst bosses? He insisted on controlling the family from prison.

Refused to officially step down or appoint an effective acting boss. Created power struggles that led to multiple Colbo wars. The third Columbbo War 1991 to 1993 was particularly devastating. Persico’s faction fought against the Arena faction. At least 12 people were killed. The family fractured. Members were arrested in massive law enforcement sweeps.

The organization nearly collapsed. Persico’s leadership style was dictatorial. He made decisions based on maintaining his own power rather than what was best for the family. ordered hits from prison that brought massive law enforcement attention, refused to cooperate even when cooperation would have benefited everyone. When Persico died in 2019, still in prison at age 85, the Columbbo family was the weakest of New York’s five families, had fewer than 100 made members, was constantly under investigation, was a shadow of what it had been before

Persico took control. Why he was worst? 46 years as boss. 33 of them in prison. Multiple civil wars. Family nearly destroyed. All because Persico couldn’t let go of power. Number nine, Philip Chicken Man. Ta, Philadelphia family. Philip Ta became boss of the Philadelphia crime family in 1980 after the previous boss, Angelo Bruno, was murdered.

Ta’s reign lasted exactly one year. March 1980 to March 1981. What made Ta one of the worst bosses? Complete inability to control his own organization. Ta inherited a family that was already fractured after Bruno’s murder. Multiple factions were competing for power. Ta needed to consolidate control, eliminate rivals, and restore order.

Instead, Ta trusted the wrong people, made bad alliances, failed to identify threats within his own organization. On March 15th, 1981, one year after becoming boss, a nail bomb was placed under Tesa’s front porch. When Tesa arrived home and walked up his front steps, the bomb exploded, killed him instantly. The bomb contained roofing nails as shrapnel, hence his postumous nickname chicken man from a Bruce Springsteen song about the murder.

The assassination was carried out by Tesa’s own under boss, Nicodemmo Little Nikki Scarfo, who’d been plotting Tesa’s death for months. Ta never saw it coming. Never identified Scarfo as a threat, never took precautions. Why, he was worst. one year as boss killed by his own under boss failed to identify the most obvious threat in his organization left the family to Scaro who would prove even worse.

Number eight, Nicodemmo, little Nikki Scaro, Philadelphia family. Nicodemos Scaro became boss of the Philadelphia family after killing his predecessor Philip Ta in 1981. was boss until his arrest in 1987. Six years of absolute chaos. What made Scaro one of the worst bosses? Psychotic violence that destroyed the family.

Scaro was 5′ 5 in 130 lb and had the worst Napoleon complex in mob history. compensated for his size through extreme brutality. During Scarfo’s six years as boss, over 30 Philadelphia family members and associates were murdered. Most were internal killings. Scaro killing his own people for perceived slights or suspected disloyalty.

Scaro created an atmosphere of terror within his own organization. Members were afraid to speak at meetings, afraid to make suggestions, afraid that any comment might be interpreted as disrespect and result in death. Scaro ordered his nephew, Philip Leonetti, who was his underboss, to participate in multiple murders.

created so much trauma that Leonetti eventually became a government witness in 1989, testifying against his own uncle. By 1987, when Scaro was arrested on raketeering charges, the Philadelphia family was destroyed. Half the membership was dead. The other half was cooperating with prosecutors. The organization was finished as an effective criminal enterprise.

Scarfo was convicted in 1988, sentenced to 55 years in prison, died in prison in 2017 at age 87. Why he was worst. Paranoid violence that killed 30 plus members in six years created so much fear that his own nephew testified against him. Destroyed the Philadelphia family completely. Number seven, Joseph Crazy Joe Gallow Proachi/C Columbbo family.

Joseph Gallow was never officially boss of the Prophi family, later renamed Colombo family, but he was a faction leader who tried to become boss and in the process nearly destroyed the family. In 1961, Gallow led a rebellion against boss Joseph Proface. Claimed Profacei was taking too much money for himself, not sharing profits fairly with soldiers and copos.

Gallow kidnapped several Profacei family leaders, including Prooface’s underboss, and held them hostage, demanding Prooface step down. What made Gallow one of the worst leaders started a war he couldn’t win? The first Colbo war 1961 to 1963 killed at least nine people, accomplished nothing. Profi remained boss until his death from cancer in 1962.

His successor, Joseph Columbo, continued fighting Gallow. Gallow’s rebellion was strategically idiotic. He had maybe 15 men. Proofi had over 100. Gallow had no support from other families, no resources beyond his own small crew, no realistic plan for victory. The war dragged on for years, accomplished nothing except getting people killed.

Gallow was eventually imprisoned on extortion charges in 1961, was released in 1971. Tried to restart his rebellion against Columbbo. On April 7th, 1972, Galla was murdered while celebrating his 43rd birthday at Ombberto’s clam house in Little Italy. Shot multiple times by Columbbo family hitmen. Died on the sidewalk outside the restaurant.

Why, he was worst. Started a war with no chance of winning. Got people killed for no purpose. Accomplished nothing except his own death. Number six, Vtorio Vic Amuso, Lucesi family. Vtorio Amuso became boss of the Luces family in 1986 alongside under boss Anthony Gaspipe Casto. Together, they led the family through one of the most violent and self-destructive periods in mob history.

What made Amuso one of the worst bosses? paranoid internal killings that destroyed the family. Between 1986 and 1991, Amuso and Casso killed approximately 40 Luces family members and associates, not rivals from other families, their own people. The murders were based on paranoia. Amuso and Casso believed everyone was a potential informant or traitor.

ordered killings based on suspicion rather than evidence created an atmosphere where no one was safe. The paranoid violence reached its peak in the early 1990s. Amuso and Kaso were killing so many of their own members that the family started falling apart. People stopped showing up to meetings, refused to take assignments, fled rather than risk being the next target.

In 1991, Amuso was arrested on racketeering charges, convicted in 1992, sentenced to life in prison, has been imprisoned since. Still officially boss as of 2024, but controls nothing. Castle was arrested in 1993. Initially cooperated with prosecutors, but was so erratic and continued committing crimes from witness protection that prosecutors kicked him out of the program in 1998.

He died in prison in 2020. Why he was worst killed 40 plus of his own members through paranoia. destroyed the Lucasi family’s operational capacity, created so much fear that members fled rather than serve. Number five, Salvatore Toto the beast. Reena, Sicilian Mafia. Salvatoreé Reena wasn’t an American mob boss.

He was boss of the Corleoni clan of the Sicilian Mafia from 1974 until his arrest in 1993. was responsible for the second mafia war in Sicily that killed over 1,000 people between 1981 and 1983. What made Reena one of the worst bosses? Violence so extreme it destroyed the Sicilian Mafia’s political protection. For decades, the Sicilian Mafia had operated with implicit government tolerance. Politicians took bribes.

Police looked the other way. The system worked because the mafia kept its violence targeted and didn’t challenge state authority directly. Reena changed that. He ordered the 1992 assassination of Judge Giovani Falconei, killed with 500 kg of explosives. Two months later, he ordered the assassination of Judge Paulo Borcelino.

Both judges were anti-mafia prosecutors. Both were killed along with their security escorts. The assassinations were strategic mistakes. The Italian government couldn’t tolerate the murder of judges. The public outrage was enormous. The political protection the mafia had enjoyed for decades evaporated overnight.

The Italian government launched a massive crackdown. arrested hundreds of mafiosi, conducted the Maxi trial that convicted 360 members. The Sicilian mafia lost its political protection and never fully recovered. Reena was arrested on January 15th, 1993. Convicted of over 100 murders, sentenced to multiple life terms.

Died in prison in 2017 at age 87. why he was worst. Ordered assassinations that destroyed the mafia’s political protection, brought down the wrath of the Italian state, destroyed decades of carefully maintained relationships, killed 1,000 plus people, and accomplished nothing except the mafia’s destruction. Number four, John Gotti, Gambino family.

John Gotti became boss of the Gambino family in December 1985 after orchestrating the murder of Paul Castiano. Was boss until his arrest in 1990. 5 years that destroyed the most powerful crime family in America. What made Gotti one of the worst bosses? Celebrity seeking behavior that brought unprecedented FBI attention.

Gotti loved the spotlight, wore expensive suits, talked to reporters, held meetings in public places, made himself the most famous mobster in America. The publicity was strategically idiotic. The FBI assigned dozens of agents specifically to investigate Gotti, planted bugs in his meeting locations, photographed him constantly, built massive racketeering cases.

Worse, Gotti’s need for respect created internal problems. He ordered murders over perceived slights. Killed Gambino member Lewis Dabono in 1990 simply because Dono didn’t show up when summoned. Killed Robert Dernardo, a major family earner over a dispute. Gotti’s arrogance extended to his own organization.

He insulted members on FBI surveillance tapes, badmouthed his under boss, Sammy Gravano, in recorded conversations. Those tapes, when Gravano heard them, convinced Graano to cooperate with prosecutors. Graano’s cooperation in 1991 was the most devastating defection in mob history. Gravano testified about 19 murders he’d participated in alongside Gotti, provided detailed information about Gambino operations.

His testimony convicted Gotti of murder and racketeering. Gotti was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Died in prison in 2002 at age 61. Why he was worst celebrity seeking that brought massive FBI attention. insulted his underboss on tape, causing him to flip. 5 years as boss led to life sentence and destruction of America’s most powerful crime family.

Number three, Paul Castano, Gambino family. Paul Castellano became boss of the Gambino family in 1976 when Carlo Gambino died and named Paul his successor. was boss for 9 years until his murder in 1985. What made Castellano one of the worst bosses? Complete disconnect from his organization. Castelliano was a businessman focused on white collar crimes, construction, bidrigging, labor union control, legitimate businesses.

Made enormous money. The Gambino family generated an estimated $500 million annually under his leadership, but Castayano lost touch with his members. Operated from a mansion in Staten Island called the White House, rarely met with captains and soldiers, made decisions without consultation, issued orders through his underboss, Thomas Botti, who was widely disliked.

Worse, Castayano was hypocritical. He issued an order that no Gambino members could deal drugs, but his own crew was dealing drugs while he looked the other way. This hypocrisy enraged members like John Gotti, whose brother Jean was indicted on drug charges. Castellano also made unauthorized hits. In December 1985, he ordered the murder of Eddie Gafola, an associate of Sammy Graano, without consulting Graano.

This violation of protocol was the final straw for many captains. On December 16th, 1985, Castayano and Botti were shot dead outside Spark Steakhouse in Manhattan. The hit was organized by John Gotti with support from multiple Gambino captains who were tired of Castayano’s leadership.

Why he was worst, lost touch with his organization, made decisions without consultation, hypocrisy about drug dealing, violated protocols, created so much resentment that his own family killed him. Number two, Albert Anastasia, Gambino family. Albert Anastasia was boss of what would later be called the Gambino family from 1951 until his murder in 1957.

Was also the operational director of murder inki in the 1930s and4s overseeing hundreds of contract killings. What made Anastasia one of the worst bosses? Erratic violence without commission approval. By the mid 1950s, Anastasia had become unpredictable, started ordering murders without consulting the commission, killed people who had nothing to do with organized crime.

In 1952, Anastasia saw someone on television who’d testified against bank robbers. The witness wasn’t connected to the mob. Had nothing to do with organized crime. But Anastasia ordered him killed anyway, just for being a witness. The hit violated every rule. You didn’t kill civilians who weren’t involved in mob business.

It brought heat, drew attention. The commission was horrified. Told Anastasia to stop. He ignored them. continued ordering unauthorized hits, became increasingly paranoid, started talking about eliminating other bosses who opposed him. Carlo Gambino, Veto Genevves, and Meer Lansky decided Anastasia had become too dangerous to control.

On October 25th, 1957, two gunmen walked into the Park Sherin Hotel barber shop in Manhattan where Anastasia was getting a shave, shot him 10 times, killed him in the barber chair. The hit was commission approved. Anastasia, the man who’d run Murder, Inc., was murdered by the same organization he’d served because he’d become uncontrollable.

Why? He was worst. Ordered unauthorized hits that brought heat, killed civilians unnecessarily. Became so erratic that the commission ordered him killed. His own organization eliminated him. Number one, Vincent theqin Jagante. Genevves family. No, wait. Actually, Jagante was one of the best bosses evaded prosecution for decades through his insanity act.

Let me revise. Number one, Carmine Galante. Bonano family. Carmine Galante was the absolute worst mob boss in Italian crime family history. Became acting boss of the Bonano family in 1974 after serving time for drug trafficking. Was boss for 5 years until his murder in 1979. What made Galante the worst? unlimited ambition combined with complete disregard for commission authority.

Galante didn’t just want to be boss of one family. He wanted to control the entire heroin trade in New York and eventually become boss of all bosses over all five families. The commission had explicitly rejected the boss of all bosses concept after Lucky Luciano eliminated it in 1931. The five families were supposed to govern collectively.

No single boss had authority over others. Galante ignored this. Started taking over heroin operations from other families without permission. imported massive quantities from Sicily, made millions monthly, refused to share profits with other families as commission rules required. Worse, Galante ordered murders of members from other families without commission approval.

This violated the fundamental rule that inner family murders required commission authorization. Galante didn’t care. killed anyone who opposed him. By 1979, every other commission boss wanted Galante dead. He was threatening war with the entire organization. Was so ambitious and reckless that allowing him to continue meant civil war.

On July 12th, 1979, three gunmen walked into Joe and Mary’s Italian-American restaurant in Brooklyn, where Galante was having lunch. shot him multiple times in the head and chest, killed him at his table. The cigar he was smoking remained in his mouth after death. Became one of the most famous mob crime scene photos ever. The hit was commission approved, carried out by his own Bonano family members because Carmine Galante had violated every rule, had threatened every boss, had become so dangerous that his own organization wanted him eliminated.

Why he was worst. Tried to become boss of all bosses despite commission rules. Started war with entire organization. Ordered unauthorized hits across family lines. Refused to share heroin profits. Created so much chaos that the commission ordered him killed by his own family. Five years as boss ended with assassination by his own people.

The worst leadership in mob history. These 10 bosses share common traits that made them failures. Paranoia, Persico, Amuso, Scarfo all killed their own members based on suspicion rather than evidence. Paranoia destroys organizations from within. Violence without strategy. Ryena Anastasia Gallow used violence excessively without considering consequences.

Violence should serve business goals, not replace them. Ego over organization. Gaudy Galante put personal ambition above organizational health. Celebrity seeking an unlimited ambition destroyed their families. Disconnect from reality. Castayano test a lost touch with their organizations. Didn’t see threats.

Didn’t maintain relationships. didn’t understand what their members needed. The worst mob bosses weren’t the least violent or least powerful. They were the ones who destroyed their own organizations through bad leadership, who created more problems than they solved, who left their families weaker than when they took control.

The best mob bosses, Luciano, Gambino, Lansky, built empires that lasted decades. The worst mob bosses destroyed empires in years, and their failures are studied as examples of how not to lead any organization, criminal or otherwise. Nice.
